How do Poles use their smartphones?

According to the latest Smart Barometer 2022 research carried out by Digital Care in cooperation with a polling company Kantar, almost 40 percent of the surveyed Poles have a smartphone worth more than PLN 1,000. Despite the pandemic and rising inflation, Poles are still eager to buy new smartphones. Rental of devices is also becoming more and more popular.

In addition, as many as 60 percent of respondents use a smartphone that is not more than 1.5 years old. This is over 10 percentage points more than in the previous edition of the 2019 survey. The situation is similar in the case of the estimated value of smartphones. 37% of respondents declare that their device is worth more than PLN 1,000, which also means an increase by 10 percentage points compared to 2019. Most people with the most expensive smartphones, 45%, are in the youngest surveyed age group of 18-29. The vast majority of devices run on Android system (86%), 12 percent of respondents use iOS-driven phones. These are mainly young people.

Reasons to replace your phone

The most frequently indicated reason for replacing the phone is the failure of the old device (44%) or its destruction (36%), as well as the lack of technological support from the manufacturer (25%). 31% of the Poles surveyed replace their smartphone when they receive a new, attractive offer. 82% of them decide to take such a step every two years or less, but over 40% would like to replace their phones more often. The respondents most often buy their phones from mobile operators (33%), traditional  electronics / household appliances stores (26%) and Allegro (13%).

The most popular accessories

The survey shows great interest of Poles in accessories integrated with smartphones. In the surveyed group, 58% of respondents use wireless headphones and 40%  wireless speakers whereas 38% wear smartwatches and 22% use smartbands. On the other hand, only 1% of consumers integrate their smartphone with their car and TV. 4% use AirTag.

Phone rental on the rise

Wanting to use high-quality devices which are also those more expensive ones – Poles are looking for various forms of financing the equipment. This trend is confirmed by the results of the Smart Barometer research, which show that electronics rental is on the rise. It is already chosen as often as loan or lease, especially in the case of Apple smartphones..

The most-rented equipment at iMad is smartphones (71%), laptops (20%), tablets (5%), but also smartwatches (3%). Among smartphones, the most popular models are iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. Importantly, 2/3 of the customers who rent equipment decide to buy additional protection, thanks to which they do not have to worry about the cost of repairing the device in the event of its damage.

Among the biggest rental benefits there are:  the possibility to enjoy a better smartphone model (46%), a lower monthly fee (43%) and the possibility to replace the phone with a newer model after one year (43%). The research results obtained one year after iMad introduced the equipment rental offer to the Polish market clearly show that this service has great potential.
