Holidays by the water – will your phone survive?

Pictures from a holiday by the sea or a lake are great souvenirs. We do not need professional cameras with convertible lenses to do this anymore. Smartphones manufacturers are constantly encouraging customers to replace them with a newer model, tempting more and more advanced cameras. Is the adventure by the water safe for our smartphone?

According to Digital Care, a company specializing in the protection of electronic devices, almost every tenth summer phone damage is caused by its soaking or flooding. Salty water is especially dangerous for the smartphone.

During the holiday season, we receive a lot of claims because of the smartphones that have badly endured the meeting with the sea. Seawater is corrosive to the metal parts of the device. No phone can defend itself against it. The salt settles under gaskets and destroys, i.e. headphone sockets – says Piotr Wójcik, Technical Claims Handling Manager in Digital Care.

Even a few years ago, there were many more cases of flooding. Technological changes, such as the lack of a removable battery, significantly increased the sealing of devices. As a result, accidental splashes or heavy rain no longer cause a malfunction.

It is worth knowing that when using the phone, there may be situations that limit its resistance to adverse conditions. Interestingly, nowadays claims are related also with phones that at the time of sale met the standards defining their resistance to humidity.

Check the IP of smartphone

Manufacturers of smartphones most often use IP standards, determining the level of the device resistance to dust and water. This designation informs how the telephone can be used.

The currently available flagship smartphone models are mostly IP 67. This means that they are dustproof and resistant to short-term immersion in water. In inexpensive models, protection may be at a lower level. The ingress protection rating is determined by two numbers. The first one describes the protection against the ingress of solids and dust. The second informs about the protection against water penetration into the device. The higher the IP standard value, the higher the protection level of the device.

Everything in the user’s hands

The new device guarantee of ingress protection does not mean that it will preserve its properties for the time of use. Improper use may negatively affect the functionality of the smartphone. Any fall or overheating can cause invisible micro damages. According to Digital Care experts, the main reasons for reducing the devices sealing are:
• The smudge of the device, for example, a SIM or a memory card slot. Lack of adequate pressure of elements and gaskets can cause that humidity or dust will get inside the device
• Mechanical damage – battered casing, small cracks, clogging due to high temperatures
• DIY ways to clean smartphones, in particular speakers and microphones. The use of sharp objects or brushes with hard bristles may damage their structure and unseal the device.

How to protect your phone?

First of all, it is worth checking the ingress protection rating of your device. Secondly, before going by the water it is worth investing in a housing that protects smartphone against water or in a waterproof case. Additional protection against flooding and damage is also to be considered. The monthly cost of mobile device protection available in the operator starts from a few zlotys per month, which in comparison with the potential cost of repairing the device is a small expense. The more so that the manufacturer’s warranty covers only failures and not the phone damage.

In case of a close encounter with water

Those, who have telephone protection from the operator can stay calm in case of flooding it will be repaired by a professional service, and if the repair will occur not possible, the customer will receive a new device. However, if we are only on our own, it is worth remembering some valuable tips.

First of all, you should turn off your phone quickly if it is still working after flooding. Do not connect the charger or USB cable to it. What are you sure you should not do by all means? Shake the phone or use a dryer, as this only causes the water to spread. Placing the phone in a container with rice or sawdust and individual attempts to dismantle the device to dry it usually end with the cancellation of the warranty and cause further damage. Undoubtedly, it will be best to quickly go to an authorized service, which is the only one that can help to dry the phone thoroughly, which will help prevent corrosion.

The first sign (IPx0): protection against solids
